Spearfishing: Catching Only What You Need and Preserving Marine Ecosystems

Ready for an adrenaline-pumping adventure that takes fishing to the next level? Spearfishing is a thrilling and one-of-a-kind sport that will challenge you in ways traditional fishing never could! Unlike regular fishing, spearfishing requires the hunter to get up close and personal with the fish and requires them to get in the water, hunt for a set target, and get close enough to spear them. This can be done with a speargun that uses elastic bands to propel the spear or a long pole spear that can be thrust by hand, making spearfishing more physically demanding and requiring a higher level of skill and technique.

Spearfishing is a much more sustainable method of fishing due to it allowing the hunter to be more selective.

Hunters can target specific species of fish and avoid accidentally catching non-targeted species, reducing bycatch—the incidental capture of non-target species such as dolphins, marine turtles, and seabirds. Whereas one of the unfortunate realities of traditional fishing is that the nets and lines are unforgiving, catching everything in their path, including non-target species. By avoiding bycatch, spearfishing can help to preserve marine ecosystems and ensure that fish populations remain healthy.

Being selective when spearfishing has particularly helped reefs around the Florida coasts. In the 1980s, a fish called the lionfish appeared in the Florida water system. This non-native species feed on a lot of native bait fish, causing a disruption in the food chain and consuming the food of native fish species who survive on those baitfish. Spearfishing has and continues to play a huge role in eradicating lionfish since there on no limits on how many can be caught and harvested. Plus, they’re delicious!

A bonus is many people find spearfishing to be more enjoyable and allows the hunter to feel more connected to the natural environment and experience the thrill of the chase. By diving into the water, hunters can witness the beauty and diversity of marine life up close, fostering a deeper appreciation and respect for the ocean and its ecosystem.

As Spearfishing became more popularized, so has the media around the sport! Spear Life, an unscripted fishing adventure docuseries follows three lifelong friends as they explore the best beach towns and spearfishing spots around the world. Spear Life takes the adventures above and below the surface, providing a unique glimpse into the diverse and captivating stories that lie beneath the ocean’s surface. With every dive, there will be new risks and dangers to overcome and NAUI works to ensure “Dive Safety Through Education!”

NAUI is a proud sponsor of Spear Life, which shares our passion for ocean conservation and promotes the preservation of the world’s underwater environments.
