NAUI’s Very Own DEMA Wave Maker Finalist Seeks Your Support

Tampa, Fla., (October 19, 2017) – The National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI Worldwide) is proud to announce that Angie Cowan (NAUI 53628) has been selected as one of four finalists for the inaugural DEMA Wave Makers Award.

DEMA recently announced that it will recognize new dive industry professionals who are employed by (or own) a DEMA-Member business by honoring a recipient with the Wave Makers Award at the annual DEMA Awards Party. This new award aims to recognize professionals who have been working in the industry for 60 months or less and have made a significant contribution to the industry during that time.

The Membership of DEMA chooses the 2017 Award recipient by viewing and voting for the finalist of their choice, based on a short video that each finalist submitted. Voting for the inaugural Wave Makers Award is now open to DEMA members. Members are invited to log in and cast their vote today! The deadline to vote is 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time on Thursday, October 26, 2017.

‘As I become more involved in the industry, I especially appreciate the opportunities I have to meet fellow divers, teachers, stewards and mentors who have done and continue to do so much for the industry, especially in terms of helping others access, better understand and value the earth’s aquatic resources,’ said Cowan. ‘It is a privilege and an honor that I do not take lightly. I look forward to working with multiple industry stakeholders to help our sport and the environment thrive well into the future.’

Angie has actively supported DEMA as both a DEMA-sponsored speaker and a highlighted speaker for NAUI at DEMA in 2016 and 2017. Her presentations have focused on developing youth education and training programs, the use of social media to enhance business opportunities and growth, and promoting aquatic conservation and diver best practices. She also volunteered and supported the NAUI booth at DEMA in 2015.

In 2016, she began working as the Communications Coordinator for NAUI Worldwide and has worked with the Women Divers Hall of Fame to coordinate and highlight the scholarship efforts of this prestigious organization. Additionally, she was instrumental in the resurrection of the NAUI-sponsored 2017 International Conference on Underwater Education in Long Beach, California.

‘Angie’s passion for diving, commitment to the preservation of the environment and her dedication to youth development and involvement in the sport make her an exceptional choice for DEMA’s Wave Maker Award,’ said NAUI Executive Director Dallas Edmiston.
