We are excited to share the inspiring journey of the Clean Ocean Divers, a group of dedicated NAUI-certified divers of all levels. This initiative, a collaboration between the Keep Fin Alive ocean conservation campaign, the Earth Legacy Foundation, and Go Dive Mossel Bay, has been making waves since 2019. Together, they’ve created the groundbreaking Clean Ocean Divers program, designed to empower divers with the skills and knowledge to conduct essential underwater reef cleanups.
The Clean Ocean Divers program includes:
- Plastic Pollution Presentation: Divers gain insights into the devastating impact of plastic on marine life.
- Interactive Workshop: Participants develop critical debris removal skills through an engaging exercise involving fishing lines and grapes.
- Speciality Dive Briefing: Comprehensive instructions for conducting safe and effective cleanup dives.
- Clean-up Dive: Divers put their training into action, removing harmful debris from our beautiful reefs.
- Data Analysis: Collected debris is analyzed, contributing valuable data to a national project tackling ghost gear along coastlines.
This two-part program doesn’t just equip divers with cleanup skills; it transforms them into passionate ocean advocates. With their newfound expertise, they are ready to protect marine life and promote ocean health wherever they dive.
The mission statement of Clean Ocean Divers is: “Empowering our diving community to preserve and conserve our coastline, by providing the knowledge, skills, and resources to keep our ocean healthy and marine life safe.” To date, Clean Ocean Divers have made significant contributions, recovering almost 8 km of fishing line, over 800 sinkers, and nearly 200 hooks from their transect site.
